The word 'independent' is often used with 'strong'. We fail to understand that there is not just a dichotomy of 'dependent' vs 'independent' – there is a spectrum. Here, one starts with being 'dependent', goes onto become 'independent' and at the end is brave enough to be 'inter-dependent'.
Our world is functioning on 'inter-dependence'. Even with the simple task of crossing the street, we trust that the drivers would notice us and change speed. The employees depend on the organization for salary and the employer depends on them for work. The most important works require a high-trust environment that produces synergistic results. We must allow ourselves to depend on and support each other to be able to reach higher goals.
So the next time we talk about 'strong', let us try to remember that it can look a lot like 'interdependence' too.
