Unsought Wisdom Series. Episode 6. Overcorrection.

Life is all about stupid decisions and good fortune. We go through beliefs, systems, structures— practice it and realize some of it work and some do not. We update and correct our approach to life based on failures and successes.

One thing that can happen during this correction is that we over-correct. Becoming a pinball that's slamming from one side to the other. This is rarely ever helpful as a new form of extreme action is just as likely to bring forth problems, only of a different kind.

If someone has been kind and giving a lot, and got taken advantage of, it is natural to try and become a taker instead, shutting off the kind side. If one was very trusting and the trust was broken, it might feel like I'll never trust anyone ever again. If a lot of planning did not give results, one can feel like just letting go of everything for a while.

All of these are very real impulses. However, rather than an overhaul of the total system that one worked with, sometimes minor tweaks are enough to fix things. Sometimes, the problem was not at all with your approach to things.

Google wasn't the first search engine, Facebook wasn't the first social media, iPhone wasn't the first smartphone, these were not polar opposite to everything that came before them. They were in the business of correcting and improving, not over-correcting.

Sometimes, everything you did was perfect, just at the wrong place and time. So changing your character 100% might end up doing a lot of harm and zero good.

So, today, are you correcting or overcorrecting?
