In this version of the universe, time is linear for most except a handful of special people called Alphas. Alphas are born with a natural power to negotiate with the past as well as bend the future. For them, the history was ever changing, swiped from left to right at whim. They could not do it every day, however, they could practice their craft only on a certain date each year called the eclipse.
Thousands of Alphas would battle it out on the night of the eclipse, each with their own change to history, putting their family, country, or just themselves on the map. An Alpha had to be careful not to over-stretch, as another more skilled Alpha could as easily wipe away her changes in the next eclipse.
For the most part though, the Alphas have come to an agreement. Each leading in different domains of the world, some in business, some in entertainment, and some in governance. That's why you would see a common thread of respect among all the high achievers in the world. Every now and then though, a young powerful Alpha appears, re-writing history to put herself at the front row. A rare few chose to live small, being at the center of a village to live out a pleasant life.
To the others around them, however, they were just as normal as others, often invisible. Because with each change in history, everyone else's memories and records also changed, making them think it was always as it seems today.
