Are You a Rebel?

If I say, “Today I am going to talk about a tech savvy teen rebellion!” – What is the first thing that comes into your mind? Whatever you may have thought, with many people it feels good. Most of us like the idea of rebellion for the rush and excitement. We all love to break the rules every once in a while. It is fun and fascinating. Let us look around– every fairytale has its rebellion.

Aladdin did not want to give the magic lamp to his uncle and then eventually got to know that the lamp held a genie inside. Have you ever watched Tom and Jerry? Remember how Jerry could defy all authority with that little body of his running in all directions? Do you remember Ocean’s Eleven? Harry Potter, the boy who called He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named by his name? Baby’s Day Out? Tom Sawyer?

All of these stories are about defying orders, breaking rules and in the end becoming winners who experienced change. Ah! All the rebels sparkling with their wit and charm. No wonder we have the rebellion inside us.

But have you ever thought of it like this, that every rebellion is also an act of obedience? When a boy sneaks out of school to smoke pot with his friends, he is in reality obeying his friends or at least his whims and desires that do not care about any consequences. He might have defied the school authority, but now he is among the disciples of some druggy. “Go ahead, smoke that pot, someone else is surely very happy that you are doing just what he wants you to.” If he did not go there, he would have disobeyed his friends’ demands.

Take Satan for example. He disobeyed Allah when he was supposed to bow down to Adam. Now he has decided that as he can no longer go to Heaven, he will do his best to convince others to go with him as well. Somewhat like the fox without a tail. He does his marketing day and night whispering ill desires to your heart. He has chosen a path. Now every time one disobeys Allah, he or she is pleasing Satan. He or she is not only rebel, but also a follower.

Allah says in the Quran, "Have you ever seen the one who has taken his own desires as his god? Would you take the responsibility of guiding him?" (Surah Furqaan, ayah 43)

The decision is not about being a rebel or not. You are already a rebel in one way or another. Who you disobey is not important; the decision to be made is about who you obey. It is pointless to change sides every day. Make your decision, the clock is ticking!
